Past Perfect Continuous

Process + Result in the past. Used to show how long an action was happening before another moment in the past.

An action was continuing up to a specific point in the past, and we can see its result.

1. Structure

Affirmative

All Subjects + had been + V-ing

👉 I had been waiting for 2 hours.

👉 They had been working all day.

Negative

Subject + had not been + V-ing

👉 She hadn't been sleeping well.

👉 We hadn't been talking before that.

Had + Subject + been + V-ing?

💡 Short Forms

2. Spelling Rules (-ing)

Rule Example
Most verbs: add -ing work ➔ working
Ends in -e: drop the 'e' make ➔ making
Ends in -ie: change to -y lie ➔ lying
Short vowel + consonant: double it run ➔ running

How to combine actions:

  • Process + Past Simple: I had been waiting for an hour when the bus arrived.
  • Duration before a point: By 5 PM, she had been studying for 3 hours.

⚠️ State Verbs Trap

Verbs of feeling and thought (want, need, know, love) are NOT used with -ing. Use Past Perfect instead!

The action recently stopped, and its result was visible in the past.
