Past Continuous
The tense of backgrounds and interruptions. Used for actions in progress at a specific time in the past.
How it looks on a timeline:
An action was in progress in the past, and maybe something else interrupted it.
1. Structure
I / He / She / It + was + V-ing
You / We / They + were + V-ing
👉 I was sleeping at 11 PM.
👉 They were playing outside.
Subject + was/were not + V-ing
👉 She wasn't reading a book.
👉 We weren't talking to him.
Was / Were + Subject + V-ing?
👉 Was he driving fast?

2. Spelling Rules (-ing)

3. Time Markers
The 'When' vs 'While' Rule:
- When + Past Simple (short action): I was reading when he called.
- While + Past Continuous (long process): While I was reading, he called.
- While + Continuous (parallel actions): While I was studying, she was working.
⚠️ State Verbs Trap
Verbs of feelings and thoughts (love, know, want) are NOT used with -ing. Use Past Simple instead!

A long action (Continuous) was interrupted by a short action (Past Simple).
3. Parallel Actions
Two or more long actions happening at the exact same time.
