Past Continuous

The tense of backgrounds and interruptions. Used for actions in progress at a specific time in the past.

An action was in progress in the past, and maybe something else interrupted it.

1. Structure

Affirmative

I / He / She / It + was + V-ing

You / We / They + were + V-ing

👉 I was sleeping at 11 PM.

👉 They were playing outside.

Negative

Subject + was/were not + V-ing

👉 She wasn't reading a book.

👉 We weren't talking to him.

Was / Were + Subject + V-ing?

💡 Short Forms

was not ➔ wasn't

2. Spelling Rules (-ing)

Rule Example
Most verbs: add -ing work ➔ working
Ends in -e: drop the 'e' make ➔ making
Ends in -ie: change to -y lie ➔ lying
Short vowel + consonant: double it stop ➔ stopping

The 'When' vs 'While' Rule:

  • When + Past Simple (short action): I was reading when he called.
  • While + Past Continuous (long process): While I was reading, he called.
  • While + Continuous (parallel actions): While I was studying, she was working.

⚠️ State Verbs Trap

Verbs of feelings and thoughts (love, know, want) are NOT used with -ing. Use Past Simple instead!

4. Use Cases Explained

1. Specific Time in the Past

An action was in progress at a specific, exact moment.

At 8 PM last night, I was watching TV.

2. Interrupted Action

A long action (Continuous) was interrupted by a short action (Past Simple).

I was cooking when the phone rang.

3. Parallel Actions

Two or more long actions happening at the exact same time.

While I was studying, my brother was playing games.

4. Atmosphere in a Story

Used to describe the background details of a story.

The sun was shining and the birds were singing.

📖 Context Practice: The Stormy Evening

At 8 PM yesterday, the city was sleeping under a heavy storm. Rain was pouring down, and the wind was blowing hard. While I was sitting by the window, I noticed my neighbors. They were trying to fix their roof. Their dog was barking loudly at the thunder. I was not reading my book because the lights were flickering. What were you doing when the power went out? I know that most people were waiting for the morning.
