Present Perfect
The bridge between Past and Present. Used for life experiences, recent actions, and things that matter right now.
How it looks on a timeline:
An action happened in the past, but the result is connected to the present.
1. Structure
I / You / We / They + have + V3 / -ed

2. Past Participle (V3)
| Verb Type | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Regular Verbs | Add -ed | play ➔ played |
| Irregular Verbs | Learn the 3rd column | see ➔ saw ➔ seen go ➔ went ➔ gone |
3. Time Markers
Where to put them?
- Middle (just, already, ever, never): I have just eaten.
- End (yet, recently, lately): She hasn't finished yet.
- Before a time period (since, for): I have lived here since 2020.
⚠️ The "Yesterday" Trap
Never use Present Perfect with finished past time words (yesterday, last year, in 2010). Use Past Simple instead!
4. Use Cases Explained
1. Life Experience
Things you have done in your life up to now. Exact time doesn't matter.
2. Recent Actions with a Result
Something happened in the past, but we can see or feel the result NOW.
3. Unfinished Time Words
Used with periods of time that are not over (today, this week, this year).
4. State Verbs (Since / For)
How long a situation has continued up to now (with verbs like know, have, be).
